Millions of people worldwide are afflicted with the skin disorder called acne, which manifests through the emergence of different skin lesions, including blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, pustules, nodules, and cysts. It is caused mainly by an interaction between multiple factors: excess production of an oily substance called sebum (oil) on the skin and abnormal shedding of dead cells on the skin surface which clogs the pores, and overgrowth of anaerobic, acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes, formerly P. acnes) in the clogged hair follicles, resulting in inflammation.
